THE DANGER OF CONFORMITY

THE DANGER OF CONFORMITY

September 24, 2026 5:52 AM Kamuzu Academy

Conformity is the tendency to change our behaviour, opinions or choices to fit in with the people around us. Psychologically, human beings naturally seek acceptance and belonging. Sometimes, we follow the crowd not because we agree, but because we fear being different (Jenness (1932))

Conformity can also be simply defined as “yielding to group pressures” (Crutchfield, 1955). Group pressure may take different forms, for example bullying, persuasion, teasing, criticism, etc. Conformity is also known as majority influence (or group pressure). For instance, changing your outward behavior to fit in with a group while privately disagreeing or adjusting to group expectations to be liked or avoid social rejection.

But here is the danger: when everyone is thinking the same way, nobody is thinking deeply.

A student may laugh at something they know is wrong because everyone else is laughing. They may stop asking questions because they do not want to appear different. They may even lower their standards simply to fit in. Slowly, the desire to belong can become stronger than the desire to become better.

The same applies to teachers and adults. Sometimes we know something is wrong, but we continue doing it simply because everyone else is doing it. We conform, even when we know better.

We can become comfortable doing things the wrong way simply because “that is how we have always done them,” rather than stopping to question whether there is a better or more effective way.

Belonging is important, but never allow the crowd to do your thinking for you. Have the courage to question, to think independently, to stand for what is right and to improve, even when you are the only one doing it.

Do not simply fit in, think, question & grow.
